The Role Played by Social Clubs
Social clubs are an important part of our society and perform a necessary function for many different people. They are a way for people to spend time with other like minded individuals, a place to socialise and enjoy the good things in life. There is a fairly long and varied history to the growth of social clubs around the world and many have come and gone while others have stood the test of time. A social club may be based around participation in a certain activity or it can just exist for people of a certain occupation or social standing to meet and spend time together. For someone to find a place where they can interact with similar people can have a great and healing effect that can have fantastic and on-going benefits for the club member.
Working men’s clubs have been around for a long time in England and began during the Victorian age. They were primarily a place where men in a similar socio-economic situation could enjoy recreational activities and attend lectures together. Over time these clubs became places where a member could enjoy a social drink, play some card and bar games and enjoy the music and entertainment that was often put on for the benefit of the members. Other more upper market social clubs were born as well, and these became known as gentlemen’s clubs.
The different roles played by modern social clubs is quite vast because there are so many types of clubs that exist. Many clubs operate around a particular activity, such as golf clubs and cricket clubs. These clubs offer their members a location to perform the activity and generally also offer a designated place to socialise afterwards. The social lives of many communities revolve around certain clubs and they are a way for different individuals to form a bond and act with a degree of unity in a society. This role should not be underestimated as people often need a common thread in order to develop common bonds and community ties with each other.
Other social clubs may revolve around a particular goal rather than an activity as such. Many clubs exist which attempt to raise money for charity and the members unite for this singular purpose. Other social clubs may be political in nature and are defined through a certain political ideal or vision. No matter what the particular vision is, all clubs offer their members a kind of sanctuary, a home away from home where they can relate to the ideas and the activities that are undertaken there.
Whether it is a purely social club or one that revolves around a certain activity, social clubs around the world perform a very valuable function. They give people the opportunity to interact with other members and develop social bonds that may last a life time. In a society that can at times be alienating and divisionary, a social club can act as a gelling agent that joins people together and helps communities to form.
