Introduction to Snowboards

When trying out any new sport for the first time it can be daunting, mind over matter is what eventually gets you through, and this is exactly what is needed when attempting to snowboard for the first time. This is why many ski resorts offer introductory courses to new comers, they arrange a sort of social gathering (which is a lot like a welcome meeting) and offer people the chance to learn about the sport, before getting on the slopes.

Snowboarding is a great fitness work out, not only are you out in the fresh air whilst doing the sport, but you are also giving your whole body a work out, as all of the body has to balance in order that you stay on the board, muscles will be used that you never thought you had. Plus it is a ‘cool’ sport to learn, anyone who is anyone can snowboard, where as skiing was once for the rich and famous snowboarding is now the sport to know.

introduction to snowboards

Since its introduction into the Winter Olympics in 1998, snowboarding has taken off in a big way becoming more popular than anyone would ever have imagined. Snowboarding has the similarities to both surfing and skateboarding, in fact the first Snowboards were called ‘snurfer’. It is always best to have a couple of lessons before trying snowboarding, as unlike skiing you have nothing but your own balance to hold you upright. There are many resorts which offer a beginners guide to the sport and usually advise on the best equipment to buy. Snowboard goggles (Snowboardbrillen) is always recommended, these help keep the glare of the sun off your face, whilst keeping any stray flakes of snow at bay.

Snowboarding as mentioned earlier also works muscles that you never thought you had. Leg and arm muscles are worked to the full, and snowboarding is great for balance and co-ordination, so if you had no sense of co-ordination before starting to snowboard, you can bet you will have by the end of your stay. It also helps with upper body strength.

Whatever your ability there is always an instructor on hand who can help with your individual needs and guide you through the steps of snowboarding, who knows by the end of your tuition you could be involves in one of the many Olympic freestyle events or even the racing events.

Since the introduction of snowboarding as an Olympic sport, many of the events which are hosted at the Olympics can be seen on the ski slopes, freestyle events such as, big air, half pip, super pipe, slope style and supercross, plus racing events such as slalom, giant slalom, and super giant slalom.

All tuition can be either pre-booked through the travel agent at the resort of choice, or can be booked on arrival at one of the many introductory events run by the ski complex, an introduction to snowboarding is definitely beneficial, once you have mastered there will be no stopping you on the slopes.
